In Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s midseason finale, Paula is going to take centerstage when she heads home to visit her father. And yet, it’s not her relationship with her father that is the focus of the hour. Rather, it’s Rebecca, who stays home and hangs out with dear old dad while Paula gets reacquainted with the one who got away.

“What’s interesting about this episode is that they used the character of my father to build a relationship with Rebecca,” Donna Lynne Champlin says. “It’s this brilliant take on how you can adopt other people’s parents because you don’t have the baggage that people have with their own parents. I thought it was brilliant that my story line was more heavily with Jeff, who is my Josh Chan, and then my father’s story line is more heavily with Rebecca.”

So while Rebecca gets to know Paula’s father, Paula will venture out and spend a bit of time with her very own Josh Chan. “It was a callback to the pilot where we have that scene outside of Beans’ house and Paula drops the nugget, ‘I wish I had been as brave as you are when I was your age,'” Champlin says. “It’s one of the kernels as to why Paula was so insistent that Rebecca make this dream come true for herself because in Paula’s mind, Jeff has always been the man that got away.”

But that doesn’t necessarily mean Paula’s husband has anything to worry about. In fact, this could end up being a good thing for her marriage … maybe. “I think we all have that man or woman that got away in our mind and we romanticize them to the point, in Paula’s case, where they become a literal obstacle to her really moving forward in her own marriage.” Whether seeing her ex will make Paula love her life more or less is yet to be seen, but one thing is certain: She’s singing a song about penises.

When Paula first sees Jeff, her ex, she breaks out into what Champlin calls a “Mamma Mia number about penises.” Because what else would you expect?

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
