Legendary rock star Alice Cooper has been cast in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live! as King Harod. It was also announced that director David Leveaux, a Tony Award nominee, will also join the live stage production.
Cooper has released 26 albums throughout his career and sold over 50 millions records worldwide. The performer is a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer known for his theatrical stage presence. Cooper had previously recorded “King Herod’s Song” for the Jesus Christ Superstar 1996 cast album in the U.K.
“Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote a showstopping musical number for Herod and we all look forward to the ‘King of Shock Rock’ taking on the King of Judea. As the casting for ‘Superstar’ ramps up, we can feel the excitement building for this brand new concert experience of what has long been considered the original rock musical,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.
Jesus Christ Superstar, a theater staple, made its stage debut in 1971 after the album under the same name reached No. 1 in the Billboard charts. The production is based on the final week of Jesus’ life, NBC’s live production joins other famous stage titles brought to the small screen like Hairspray, The Wiz, The Sound of Music and Peter Pan.
