“Some people still believe in witches, that magic is real,” Teresa Palmer’s Diana Bishop says in the first teaser trailer for A Discovery of Witches. By the time you see the new TV series based on the bestselling All Souls trilogy by Derborah Harkness, you will too.
Harkness breathed new life into the vampire-lovefest sub-genre with A Discovery of Witches, about a powerful witch at Oxford named Diana, who’s trying to suppress her magic until she meets a handsome and mysterious vampire named Matthew Clairmont, played in the series by Matthew Goode.
Their budding love is tested as they are catapulted into a dangerous mystery surrounding Diana’s untapped power and Ashmole 782, an elusive tome that witches, vampires, and daemons alike would do anything to obtain.
The first footage hails from Sky One, through which the series will be released internationally. An American distributor has yet to be named. Among the scenes revealed are Diana’s first meeting with Matthew in the Bodleian library, her misty-day row downriver, and a man candy sighting on the part of Goode.
Harkness also debuted the first official photos of the magical coupling on social media.
“I walked onto the set and I cried,” Harkness said of the experience to EW. “Someone was working on part of the set, and I recognized the grain of the wood as being the Bodleian. I didn’t even have to ask, I knew exactly what it was — I said, ‘That is a column base from the Bodleian.’ ‘Cause I have stared at that column base for so many years in Duke Humfrey’s, I could tell that’s what it was, and at the level of wood grain, to be able to know what something is, that’s pretty amazing.”
The cast also includes Alex Kingston (Doctor Who) as Diana’s witchy aunt Sarah Bishop, Valarie Pettiford (The Blacklist) as Sarah’s partner Emily (Em) Mather, Lindsey Duncan (The Leftovers) as Matthew’s vampiric mother Ysabeau, Tanya Moodie (Sherlock) as a daemon Agatha Wilson, Daniel Ezra (BBC’s Undercover) as daemon Nathaniel Wilson, Edward Bluemel (House Finch) as vampire Marcus, and Freddie Thorpe (Overdrive) as new character for the series Matthieu Beny.
Shooting for the series began in September and the show is slated to premiere in the U.K. in 2018.
