Try being a 'pouting,' 'sleeping' girl boss that's 'hot…but also Wonder Woman'
In a comedic bit recorded for Friday night’s The Tonight Show, the star of Molly’s Game auditioned for the part of Angela. What reads as a simple line on the page (“Hi, my name’s Angela. It’s nice to meet you.”) became utterly more complex as the casting director (Fallon) asked her to read it again as all kinds of “hot.”
First it was just, “Can you read it again, but hot?” Then it was “sweet and modest, but also hot” and “younger.” Then it was “like a spicy little peppermint with a secret… but hot.” Then it was “strong like a girl boss, but pouting, but sleeping, but also you love him, but hot… but also be Wonder Woman.”
Chastain, being the powerhouse force that she is, executed each ungodly request to perfection. But the point is that she shouldn’t have to jump through so many hoops when her male counterpart gets to read his line as is.
The actress has been speaking out about sexism and harassment in Hollywood in the wake of scandals involving Harvey Weinstein, Brett Ratner, Kevin Spacey, James Toback, Ed Westwick, Jeffrey Tambor, Louis C.K., and numerous other industry figures.
“I feel it’s our responsibility to do whatever we can to amplify the voices of the people who’ve come forward because, you know, just tweeting or talking about it is nothing compared to the bravery of a woman or a man who’s risked their career, their livelihood, everything to come forward,” Chastain told Fallon during the interview portion of The Tonight Show. “And the only reason they do that is to protect other people from abuse. So, for me, silence is complicity and I want to do whatever I can to heal our industry — but not only our industry. It’s in many, many industries, so to help heal our society.”
