Samantha Bee looks beyond Roy Moore: We all need to kick out our own 'creeps'
Moore 'isn't just an Alabama problem, it's a human problem,' she said
While railing against Roy Moore, the Alabama Senate candidate accused of sexual harassment and assault by six women, Samantha Bee acknowledged that he doesn’t just signify an Alabama problem. “It’s a human problem,” she said on Full Frontal Wednesday night.
Bee also used the segment to call out a number of men in Hollywood accused of sexual misconduct and abuse, including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal, Mel Gibson, and Louis C.K. “It’s easy to condemn someone else’s predator, but it’s harder when it’s your own critically acclaimed pervert,” she said as a photo of C.K. appeared on the screen.
The New York Times published an exposé in which five women accused C.K. of unwanted sexual advances. The comedian later confirmed them to be true.
With Moore, Bee said, “Republicans have to ask themselves a tough question: Which is worse, electing an alleged pedophile or a Democrat?” Among the claims against him, Moore has been accused of initiating a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old when he was in his 30s, groping a woman, and sexually assaulting another. Moore has denied these claims as “lies and smears,” though a number of Republicans have called on him to drop out of the race.
“Each community has to kick out their own creeps,” Bee added. “That applies to whether you’re in politics, entertainment, or whatever the f—k you call Steven Seagal’s profession. And it’s hard, especially when those people have the power to hire us, fire us, or presumably have us murdered by Russian mobsters.”
The host of Full Frontal said the progress made in the entertainment industry isn’t enough. “Everyone in Hollywood is patting themselves on the back for exiling Harvey Weinstein, but this week The Hollywood Reporter raved about Daddy’s Home 2, proclaiming ‘Mel Gibson is once again family-friendly’ because nothing says family-friendly like a racist domestic abuser with a drinking problem and the words ‘daddy’s home.'”
