Democrats scored key victories in governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey on Tuesday night, but celebrating in style isn’t exactly their specialty, according to Seth Meyers.
On Wednesday’s episode of Late Night, Meyers played a clip of New Jersey Governor-elect Phil Murphy jumping for joy as he took the stage to address his supporters on election night, and the comedian was not impressed.
“Oh my God, Democrats are such nerds,” Meyers said. “He looks like he just won a chess meet.”
Meyers did, however, give props to Danica Roem of Virginia, a former journalist who unseated 13-term incumbent Del. Robert G. Marshall. Whereas Roem will become one of the nation’s first openly transgender elected officials, Marshall had called himself Virginia’s “chief homophobe” and earlier this year introduced a “bathroom bill” that died in committee.
According to Meyers, “The best part of Roem’s victory was her response when she was asked if she had anything to say about Marshall after she beat him. Roem said, ‘I don’t attack my constituents. Bob is my constituent now.’
“Damn,” Meyers added. “She threw so much shade, his face turned even whiter!”
