Don’t worry, Barb fans: The death of Nancy’s murdered pal will be addressed once again in Stranger Things 2.
Barb (Shannon Purser) was killed by the demogorgon while her BFF (Natalia Dyer) was gettin’ it on with boyfriend Steve (Joe Keery). The loss of her friend and guilt surrounding her death weighs heavily on Nancy in season 2.
“Especially this season, Barb’s a big part of Nancy’s story line and that drive to — I don’t know how to say it otherwise — to find justice,” says Dyer, referencing the #JusticeForBarb hashtag that was inspired by the season 1 killing. “There are a lot of loose ends there that Nancy feels need to be addressed.”
Adds co-creator Ross Duffer, “We wanted to show that’s something that Nancy didn’t really deal with last year.”
Barb may be gone but her family will appear in Things 2. “You met her mom briefly last year but we introduce her dad,” says Matt Duffer. “The only thing that bothered me about the Barb criticism was people saying her parents didn’t care about her — of course they care. In their mind, Hopper has been slacking off and he’s a joke of a chief.”
Stranger Things 2 arrives on Netflix on Oct. 27.
Netflix’s hit sci-fi series follows a group of kids in the '80s battling supernatural forces in Hawkins, Ind.
