The season 1 finale left Versailles in great upheaval — Louis XIV’s beloved Henriette (Noemie Schmidt) was dead and his son, the dauphin (James Clack), had been kidnapped.

In this exclusive clip of the first few minutes of the season 2 premiere, we pick up right where the royals left off. Louis (George Blagden) is pacing through the snow hearing Henriette’s voice in his mind. He worries over the human cost of building Versailles, while his trusted servant Bontemps (Stuart Bowman) assures him the palace will stand as “an artifact for all eternity.”

We also see a glimpse of Fabien Marchal (Tygh Runyan) on the hunt for Rohan (Alexis Michalik) and the kidnapped dauphin.

After earning Ovation TV its highest ratings ever for its sexy debut season, Versailles is returning this fall with a darker, more troubling second installment. This suspenseful first scene is just the first glimpse of a season filled with court intrigue and backstabbing.

Watch the clip above for more. Season 2 of Versailles premieres Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 p.m. ET on Ovation TV.
