After the first season of Lee Daniels’ music drama Star ended with Jahil (Benjamin Bratt) on the run after the murder of his godson Hunter and lover Eva, Bratt says the next season will focus on his and other characters’ “ascension.”
“Whether you’re talking about the girls who at the end of season 1 have just won the Honda Next Best million-dollar contract with the record company in their ascension to success,” Bratt explains to EW, “or Carlotta as a new manager stepping out of just the responsibility of being a salon owner and becoming a powerful manager, or Jahil, who is truly at the emotional and physical bottom. He’s a lost soul, so he has to find a way to rise from the ashes. Everyone is on the rise.”
Queen Latifah, who stars opposite Bratt as salon owner-turned-girl group manager Carlotta Brown, says taking Jahil’s place might put Carlotta in over her head.
“I think it’s going to change the dynamic with them pretty quickly because she’s going to get a taste of what it’s like to do what Jahil was doing, or attempting to do well,” she hints.
Star‘s second season, which features a special crossover with Empire, premieres Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
