Stephen Colbert capped off his Emmy Awards monologue with a surprise guest who left the crowd inside the Microsoft Theater in shock.
After joking about President Donald Trump and his obsession with ratings, Colbert wondered who would be able to accurately tabulate the Emmy Awards audience. The answer? Ousted White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who rolled out onto the stage riding a podium and spoofed his post-inauguration press conference where he berated the press for accurately reporting Donald Trump’s inaugural crowd size.
“This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period. Both in person and around the world,” Spicer said, as the audience gasped, laughed, and appeared generally shocked — none more than Veep star Anna Chlumsky.
Colbert didn’t announce Spicer’s name and sent him off by thanking Melissa McCarthy, an Emmy winner this year for her Saturday Night Live portrayal of Spicer. (McCarthy watched Spicer from the audience.)
Said Spicer in January, “This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period. Both in person and around the globe.” It wasn’t.
