Kevin has always been an impulsive creature, whether it’s quitting The Manny or ditching The Back of an Egg. But did the earnest actor character on This Is Us get caught up so intensely in his reunion with his ex-wife, Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge), that he is already getting down on one knee to propose?
That’s certainly the most dramatic theory that can be derived from a photo series creator Dan Fogelman tweeted on Saturday. In the shot, Kevin (Justin Hartley) is decked out in a tux, holding out a ring, candelit champagne dinner on a nearby table, the Eiffel Tower in the background. In this scenario, one would assume that Kevin is feeling bad after telling Sophie that his life was with her in New York, only to head back to L.A. to shoot a Ron Howard movie, and he decided to go big to show her that he was committed to her. Of course, it’s likely that Fogelman, a master of plot twists, would not spill such a big plot move on social media weeks before it happened.
Given the show’s penchant for jumping around time periods, this could be a flash-forward or even a flashback to when Kevin proposed to Sophie the first time (though it looks like present-day Kevin). It seems more plausible that this scene is from one of Kevin’s acting projects, maybe even a commercial. It doesn’t look exactly era-appropriate to the 1940s, so maybe it’s not Howard’s WWII movie that Kevin and Sylvester Stallone are starring in.
This much we know: This Is Us returns to NBC for season 2 on Sept. 26. And Kevin can pull off a tux.
