HBO has been rocked by leaks lately as hackers released episodes, emails, and other company content. But what does it mean moving forward for the premium cable channel’s biggest show, Game of Thrones? We asked Jaime Lannister himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, when he stopped by EW Morning Live (Entertainment Weekly Radio, SiriusXM, channel 105) Thursday morning to chat about the show and his new movie Shot Caller.
So will Game of Thrones scripts now be brought via armored car at this point? “The irony, of course, is last year was crazy,” says Coster-Waldau about what cast members had to do to receive a script. “We had to set up all these email accounts. They had to be triple and quadruple [checked]. All this stuff, right? And, of course, now they have this big hack!”
Coster-Waldau then recounted what the network told him and his costars when the hack happened. “And then we get a call [saying] ‘They have all your information. And we’re not sure what’s going to happen’ What do you mean you don’t know what’s going to happen? ‘Well, we don’t know what’s going to happen but they have everything.’ Okay, great.”
So what should the show do to protect the twists and turns that are sure to be coming in season 8? Coster-Waldau believes it’s time to get back to basics. “I think they’re basically going to go back to hand-delivering and just giving us scripts,” says the star. “Just give us the hard copies instead of all this email and digital stuff. I think that’s what’s going to happen in a few years’ time, because you know, you talk to cops on the street, ‘What’s the biggest crime now?’ It’s all credit card fraud. It’s all that stuff. It’s digital. So we got to go back to cash.”
Considering what Game of Thrones actors are paid — worth every penny, by the way — that better be one big mattress Coster-Waldau owns if he’s planning to start stuffing cash in it.
