Julie Klausner, creator and star of Difficult People, has only praise for her costar John Turturro, whose character she describes as “so wonderfully weird.”
“His sex vibes are from another era,” the actress joked during an appearance on Entertainment Weekly: The Show. “He just adds this flavor like nothing else on the show.”
Turturro plays Dusty, a former lover of Julie’s mom Marilyn. Helicopter mother Marilyn is played by Andrea Martin, whom Klausner calls her hero. “She’s so authentic and truthful that I really do believe she’s my mom when I’m acting scenes with her,” she said, “which makes things easier for me because I’m not as good of an actor as she is.”
Shakina Nayfack, who plays Lola on the Hulu original series, also got a shout-out from Klausner. “She’s also a great example of a trans character, if I may say so, on television who is revolutionary not just by the fact of her visibility but just because she’s super funny and she’s as awful as everybody else is in the world of the show,” she said.
