There’s no question The Fosters has broken barriers in terms of its portrayal of the foster system, gay marriage, and gay teens, and it’s been gradually and carefully continuing to do so in the development of Callie’s (Maia Mitchell) romantic relationship with Aaron (Elliot Fletcher), a trans man.

In this exclusive clip from next Tuesday’s episode, Callie tells Cole (Tom Phelan) about her new relationship. Cole is surprised. He just assumed that when Callie wasn’t attracted to him several seasons ago, it had to do with the fact that he is trans.

“I told you that wasn’t…” Callie says.

“I guess I didn’t totally believe you,” Cole responds. “It was easier than thinking it was me who was the problem.”

“What a wonderful thing, for Callie to have access to two different points of view from trans characters on the same show,” executive producer Peter Paige told EW of the scene. “And for those points of view both to highlight the very ordinariness of trans relationships.”

Given President Donald Trump’s recent ban on trans people serving in the military, Paige added, “Human beings are human beings, and our wants and needs barely differ — we all desire to love and be loved, to see and be seen, to be respected and heard and honored. Why is that so hard for people to understand?”

The Fosters airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
