If you spent the entirety of Westworld‘s first season at least mildly confused about what was happening, don’t worry: You weren’t alone. In fact, one of the show’s stars shared your confusion, too.

When EW spoke to the HBO sci-fi series’ cast at Comic-Con International, Ed Harris revealed that having co-creator Jonathan Nolan on set to answer questions didn’t help much.

“I’m very happy that Jonah is on the set a lot, ” Harris began. “The problem in talking to Jonah is that he explains something to you in such terms that you’re sitting there and you’re nodding your head, and you’re going, ‘Yeah.’ Then you walk away and you go, ‘What the f— is he talking about?'”

You would think that not understanding everything would make it hard to keep track of his character’s emotional story line, but it doesn’t, he said.

“Well, when you’re really not sure what’s going on, it doesn’t really matter,” joked Harris, before adding that it’s just a matter of putting in the work. “You just try to keep track of what’s going on with your character moment-to-moment. So, whether you’re shooting episode 2, 3, 1, 4, whatever, you just have to do your homework and know what’s going on.” Sounds simple enough!

Westworld recently began production on season 2.

HBO’s ambitious science-fiction thriller Westworld is based on the 1973 Michael Crichton novel of the same name. The series developed by Jonathan Nolan stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, and more top names.
