In the name of Shark Week, Michael Phelps will dive back into the water and take on his most fearsome opponent to date: a great white.

The world’s greatest swimmer will race a shark because… do you really need a reason? But okay, it’s so we can learn about this predator of the sea during the 29th installment of Discovery’s Shark Week.

The swimmer didn’t race side-by-side with the deadly animal, but a competition was set up to see who could swim 100 meters in the fastest time. And with great whites capable of speeds of up to 25 miles per hour, it’s reasonable to assume that the 28-time Olympic medalist is not a favorite to win. He’ll need every advantage he can get, which includes being fitted with a special monofin, as you will see in this first-look clip from the special.

“For 20 years of me spending time in the sport of swimming and training, this is going to make me the fastest? Just putting on this fin is going to make the fastest?” questions Phelps. “Should have just done this all along. What the hell was I thinking?”

Click on the video to see how Phelps is seeking every advantage for his shark showdown.

Phelps Vs Shark: Great Gold Vs Great White airs the first night of Shark Week, July 23 at 8 p.m. ET. For the schedule of all Shark Week 2017 programming, swim over here.
