Add gender fluidity to the list of things Degrassi: Next Class will touching upon when it returns for its fourth season on Netflix on July 7.

As revealed in the exclusive clip above, Yael (played by Jamie Block) tells Lola that they’ve been questioning their identity as they don’t identify with either end of the gender spectrum (male or female).

“I don’t feel like a girl, or what everyone thinks is a girl,” says Yael, who was momentarily confused as to whether they were simply gay. “I don’t like makeup or stuff like you do. I really, really hate my boobs… But I’m definitely not a boy either.”

This prompts Lola to introduce her friend (and fellow Gamer club vlogger) to the idea of genderfluidity, citing one of her favorite vloggers as an example.

“They feel like they’re between a boy or girl. Or both. Or neither,” explains Lola. “If being a boy or girl is made up, then you can make whatever you want.”

This new development for Yael’s character fits in with their recent storylines on the Netflix teen drama as they’ve never felt comfortable with what might be considered traditionally female activities. It also marks the show’s first genderqueer character in the history of the series at large.
