Friends Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are finally getting a chance to work together — just not in the way you might expect.

The actors — who were previously tied to a Guys and Dolls remake and currently have a musical comedy in the works — will provide the English voiceover for the central characters of Comrade Detective, an Amazon Studios and A24 comedy shot in Romania. Set during the 1980s at the peak of Cold War hysteria, the show follows Detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu (played on-screen by Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici, respectively) as they investigate the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionesco and simultaneously uncover a plot to destroy their country by capitalism.

The conceit of the series is that it’s Romania’s most popular TV show created by the government to entertain viewers and espouse communist ideals while also inspiring nationalism and love of country. In Comrade Detective’s fictional world, the once-forgotten show has been “brought back” and remastered years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Other members of the show’s voice cast include Jenny Slate (Gifted), Chloë Sevigny (Bloodline), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Fred Armisen (Documentary Now!), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Bobby Cannavale (Master of None), Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed), Katie Aselton Duplass (Legion), Jerrod Carmichael (The Carmichael Show), Bo Burham (The Big Sick), John Early (Search Party), Tracey Letts (The Lovers), Debra Winger (The Lovers), Jason Mantzoukas (The League), and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor).

The Sitter‘s Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka created and executive-produce the series along with Rhys Thomas (Documentary Now!), who’ll also be directing. Other executive producers on the project include Tatum himself, Reid Carolin (Logan Lucky), Peter Kiernan (Mad Love), and Andrew Schneider, as well as Ravi Nandan (The Carmichael Show) and John Hodges (Safety Not Guaranteed).

“In a world of global television, it was inevitable that the best comedy of the year would come from Romania. Well, that day has come,” head of comedy, drama, and VR at Amazon Studios, Joe Lewis, said in a statement. “Comrade Detective is unbelievably compelling, visually brilliant, and Gregor and Iosef are the heroes we need. Thanks to A24, Channing Tatum, Rhys Thomas, Brian Gatewood, Alex Tanaka, as well as the incredibly creative team behind this wild new series.”

Added A24: “As passionate fans of cinema and television, we have long heard about this genre-defining show and are thrilled to work with Free Association and Amazon to bring it to audiences.”

Comrade Detective will be available to stream Aug. 4 on Amazon Prime Video.
