Stephen Colbert defends CNN on retraction: Trump is 'guilty of fake news'
Stephen Colbert came to CNN’s defense after President Trump lodged another Twitter attack on the media organization for its retraction of a Russia-related story. However, the late-night host first lodged a few jabs himself.
“This is CNN’s worst mistake since their short-lived spinoff, Wolf Blitzer’s Rockin’ Situation Garage,” Colbert joked on The Late Show Tuesday.
The network was forced to pull a story about Congress investigating a Russian investment fund with ties to Trump officials, and three journalists resigned as a result. “CNN says that the retraction does not mean the facts of the story were necessarily wrong, but they pulled the story because standard editorial processes were not followed,” Colbert said. “Yes, it’s a fine story — they just forgot to call it ‘breaking news’ and have a countdown clock.”
The host noted that a Trump transition official, Anthony Scaramucci — and Colbert did not ignore the “Bohemian Rhapsody” play — accepted the apology but “Tweetster in Chief” Trump “unloaded” another Twitter storm. “CNN does have some phony stories,” Colbert said after reading the latest fake news claims from POTUS. “I watched Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown and I didn’t see any parts of his body I didn’t already know.”
He added, “There is one person who’s guilty of fake news out there. It’s Donald Trump.” The Washington Post reported a fake Time magazine issue with Trump on the cover is hanging on the walls of his golf clubs. “Trump made his own Time magazine cover?” Colbert exclaimed. “My god, that can only mean he’s acquired mall kiosk technology.”
