John Oliver opened Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight with a look at last week’s biggest news story: the testimony fired FBI director James Comey gave to the Senate Intelligence Committee about his interactions with President Donald Trump.

Like fellow late-night hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Kimmel, Oliver had fun using video footage of Comey’s actual testimony to set-up punchlines.

“Just listen to the amazing reason Comey gave for taking detailed notes on his meetings with Trump,” Oliver said before tossing to a Comey clip.

“I was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of our meeting and so I thought it really important to document it,” Comey said last week.

“He is describing his meeting with the president like a person who thought he was about to be murdered,” Oliver joked. “All of a sudden, we were alone, so I texted my location to a friend and tried to get some of his DNA under my fingernails.”

While there was speculation Trump might live-tweet Comey’s appearance, the president waited until the day after to post his thoughts on social media. “Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication…and WOW, Comey is a leaker!” Trump wrote on Friday.

The contradictory phrasing of Trump’s tweet was not lost on Oliver, who mocked the president’s logic on Sunday.

“Just think about what he’s saying there: Trump is essentially claiming that he’s been vindicated by testimony that he’s claiming is false,” Oliver joked. “At this point, he’s become a walking logical paradox. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he just starts tweeting things like, ‘I just traveled back in time and killed myself. VERY UNFAIR!'”
