Nicole Kidman is throwing cold water on the notion of Big Little Lies season 2.

Speaking to actor Ewan McGregor for Variety’s “Actors on Actors Presented by Shutterstock” series (video below), Kidman said there are no current plans for a second run of the beloved HBO limited series.

“It was a book so it was pretty finite,” Kidman said. She added, speaking of the all-star cast, “We got the taste for it, so we’re like, ‘Oh, what a pity.’ You never know, you always hope, but there’s no story, there’s absolutely no prospects right now.”

Based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies was a breakout hit for HBO earlier this year, a murder mystery focused on a group of Northern California women, led by stars Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz. Kidman was an executive producer on the series alongside Witherspoon. (David E. Kelley created the series and wrote all the episodes; Jean-Marc Vallée was the director.) In the wake of the finale, Kidman told Entertainment Weekly there might be room for a season 2 — especially if it addressed the backstory of Kravitz’s character, Bonnie, who is revealed in the finale to have killed Kidman’s character’s abusive husband.

“The backstory of Bonnie is complicated, and not fully explored, which is probably why we need to do a season 2,” Kidman said at the time. “It indicates that every woman is holding some sort of secret or damage or something and that’s not fully explored. We don’t have any plans for a season 2, but the beauty of this is there are so many deep stories here that are ripe for mining. There are so many different ways to go with all of these women. This is such a small portion of their lives, but I love that people have connected to them in such a deep way. And everyone in different ways to different women.”

Following the finale, Moriarty told Australian publication The Sydney Morning Herald that producers asked her to come up with some ideas for another round. “I wouldn’t write a new book but perhaps a new story, and then we’ll see what happens,” she said, also citing Bonnie as a possible option.

“The obvious thing is, first of all, I think we could bring in more of Bonnie’s story from the book,” Moriarty said. “And also what happens next [for Kidman’s Celeste]. That’s the question that’s also a really interesting thing when you’ve been through a relationship like that, how do you feel now? How would she feel? She’s grieving. She’s still grieving for the end of a terrible relationship and I think that would be a really interesting thing to explore. So there’s a whole lot of different story lines.”

Last month, Witherspoon said discussions about a season 2 had taken place — and she expressed hope something could happen. “We hope so. I mean, I feel like it’s — Nicole [Kidman] and I produced as well, so we’ve been talking to the writer, Liane Moriarty, who wrote the book, about just new ideas of what these characters could do,” Witherspoon told Ellen DeGeneres. “But it seems like people just love the characters, so hopefully we can go on.”
