Over the years, all of the Pretty Little Liars have had their fair share of torture, physical and mental. There was that time Aria was put in a box with a dead body and nearly thrown off a moving train. Or the time Spencer was trapped in a dressing room with a snake. And who could forget Hanna’s dental surgery, Emily nearly being sawed in half, or Ali being buried alive?! If you want to talk about a difficult high school experience, these girls definitely had it.
When EW sat down with showrunner I. Marlene King and stars Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell, Sasha Pieterse, and Lucy Hale, we discussed which Liar had it the worst. “All roads lead to Alison,” King says. “She was always the soul. We would do these diagrams and Ali was always in the center because everything went from there in this story. But then we took turns seasonally. We would pick on one particular Liar more than the others.”
According to King, the writers quite literally kept charts so that they could fairly distribute the danger — and in the final episodes, it’s all about Aria, which fans have already seen a bit of in recent weeks.
Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
