The BBC has announced that actor John Simm will once again be portraying Doctor Who villain The Master in the upcoming season of the long-running British science fiction show, which premieres on BBC America on April 15. Simm’s return to the role comes as a surprise; in recent years, actress Michelle Gomez has played a female version of the character, called “Missy,” and will do so once again in the new season, the last to star Peter Capaldi as the titular Time Lord. The news that Simm is coming back to the show was reported by the Radio Times.

“I can confirm that it’s true. Thanks to the power of time travel I’m back,” Simm was quoted by the Radio Times as saying. “It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people, and I can’t wait for you all to see what The Master gets up to in the next series.”

“Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who, but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what The Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor,” said showrunner Steven Moffat. “It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan-favorites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face-to-face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.”

It’s not clear how, if at all, this will impact Simm’s role on ABC’s The Catch. He joined the Shondaland show as a series regular and will appear throughout the second half of the season.

Doctor Who costars Matt Lucas as Nardole and Pearl Mackie as the Doctor’s new companion, Bill. Watch the trailer for the new season, above.
