This former James Bond is about to have his whiskey neat, not stirred.

Pierce Brosnan stars in AMC’s new western series, The Son, as the stern patriarch of a powerful oil and ranching dynasty in 1800s Texas.

In the exclusive clip above, Brosnan’s Eli McCullough addresses an evening gathering on the occasion of his birthday, observing the changing times and the need to “roll with the punches.” He notes, “We’re enterin’ the modern age — if anyone picks up a gun now, it’s because we’re out for quail or deer!” In the end, he calls for a toast “to the most bountiful place on God’s green earth”: the state of Texas.

Jacob Lofland, Sydney Lucas, David Wilson Barnes, and Jess Weixler also star in the family saga.

The Son premieres Saturday, April 8 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
