Well, that didn’t take long.
During Thursday’s episode of The Blacklist: Redemption, Scottie (Famke Janssen) discovered that Tom (Ryan Eggold) is not only working with her still-alive husband Howard (Terry O’Quinn) but that he’s also their son!
“The cat’s out of the bag and the gloves are off!” executive producer Jon Bokenkamp tells EW. “Scottie now knows she’s been lied to by the son she’s searched for all these years — she knows Tom and Howard have been working against her in secret — so there’s a great emotional story to explore; a real war that’s going to explode. I think, if they survive this, the Hargraves are going to need a lot of wine to get through next year’s Thanksgiving Dinner.”
That’s an understatement. Upon learning Tom was working with Howard, Scottie ordered a hit on Tom, then unaware that he is actually her long-missing and presumed dead child. Solomon (Edi Gathegi) came thisclose to following through, but Scottie called off the hit at the last minute after learning the truth. So yeah, she nearly killed her son.
“They confront that incredibly soon,” Bokenkamp says of the mother-son relationship. “That was never intended to be a secret we keep for eternity or something that we would question. It was just a condition that Tom lives with, and so that coming out is going to open up the story in a really compelling way. This really weird screwed up family dynamic comes to the forefront of the series, and I think is going to be a lot of fun.”
But the question remains whether they are truly family. Yes, Scottie Hargrave and Howard Hargrave are his parents. But is Scottie actually Scottie? A recent episode raised that question after Tom and Howard uncovered Russian operatives who ultimately undergo plastic surgery to look like their targets, thus taking over their lives. Is the woman purporting to be Scottie actually a Russian spy? Bokenkamp promises we’ll have an answer by season’s end!
The Blacklist: Redemption airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
