Fans of Saturday Night Live know Sasheer Zamata from her several seasons as a cast member on the show. But do they know how to say her name?
In her new (and first-ever) stand-up special — titled Pizza Mind, debuting on Seeso March 30 — Zamata riffs on how often people mispronounce her name… and how those people are almost always white.
“It is so strange to me, because it’s phonetic,” Zamata tells EW. “It’s harder to pronounce wrong! People try to put, like, two H’s in there, as in Shasheer, which is so awkward for your mouth to do. It’s like, why are you doing this to yourself? You don’t have to!”
Zamata also discussed with EW the impact SNL, which she joined in 2014, has had on her comedy. “I feel like I’ve definitely become a better writer since working on the show,” she says. “And things that I haven’t been able to use on the show have gone into my performance onstage. I think by default my work has become more political and a little more biting than it was before, which I like.”
