For H.G. Wells (Freddie Stroma) and John Stevenson (Josh Bowman), a.k.a. Jack the Ripper, nothing is easily accomplished, not even grabbing drinks. In Sunday’s episode of Time After Time, H.G. chases John to Paris in 1918, and when they meet in a bar, they quickly wind up arguing over what John wants to do in France during World War I.

Though H.G. tries to explain the gravity of war (it sounds like John’s planning something big), John argues that he’s being dramatic; after all, conflict is inevitable. “War can never be truly stopped. Once you unleash a beast of this magnitude, there’s no way to call it off,” he says, before dropping a reference to a novel H.G. will write in the future, if all stays the same. “Perhaps one day we shall annihilate each other. We’ll call it ‘The War of the Worlds.'”
