Michael Kelly, Jason Ritter, and Kate Bosworth are gearing up for The Long Road Home.
The three actors are among the newly announced cast members of National Geographic’s eight-part miniseries about the bloody Iraq war battle that has come to be known as Black Sunday.
Kelly (House of Cards) will play Lt. Col. Gary Volesky, a battalion commander who leads a daring rescue operation after a surprise attack by Iraqi insurgents; Ritter (Parenthood) will portray fellow soldier Capt. Troy Denomy; and Bosworth (Blue Crush) will play Denomy’s wife, Gina.
Also on board are Walking Dead alum Sarah Wayne Callies, Shameless actor Noel Fisher, Jeremy Sisto, Jon Beavers, Jorge Diaz, Ian Quinlan, Darius Homayoun, and Patrick Schwarzenegger.
The Long Road Home is based on Martha Raddatz’s nonfiction book of the same name, which recounts how a patrol from the 1st Cavalry Division was ambushed in a Baghdad alley in April 2004, marking a turning point in the conflict from a peacekeeping mission to battling an insurgency.
Mikko Alanne (The 33) adapted Raddatz’s book and is serving as showrunner.
Production will begin this month at Fort Hood, Tex., with the series to air later this year.
