NBC ordered four 30-minute episodes of 'Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update."
“Weekend Update” is going primetime. NBC announced Tuesday that the popular Saturday Night Live news desk segment is expanding with Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update, a weekly half-hour telecast featuring Colin Jost and Michael Che.
The spinoff news satire show will consist of four episodes to air beginning Thursday, Aug. 10 in the 9 p.m. primetime time slot on NBC. Just as with SNL‘s “Weekend Update” segment, Jost and Che will anchor the desk with SNL cast members guesting.
As NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt remarked in a statement, the goal is to help fill the gaps between seasons of the late-night sketch comedy show. “SNL is having its best season in a quarter of a century — how many shows can say that?! — so we didn’t want them to take the summer off,” he said. “We’re thrilled to have Colin Jost and Michael Che continuing their unique brand of news with fresh ‘Weekend Update’ shows in primetime this August.”
AMC recently made a similar move with Talking with Chris Hardwick, a Talking Dead-style pop culture commentary show to air during breaks for The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.
Jost and Che previously took “Weekend Update” on the road with special installments for the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, while former anchor Seth Meyers led a previous primetime attempt with Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update Thursday.
Scarlett Johansson hosted the latest episode of SNL, which will return April 8 with host Louis C.K. and music guest The Chainsmokers.
