In the ultimate space race to obtain the final piece of the Spear of Destiny, the Legends actually triumphed over tthe Legion of Doom — but will they be able to control the Spear?
During Tuesday’s episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the Legends discovered that Commander Steel (Matthew MacCaull) hid the final piece of the Spear within the flag that Neil Armstrong planted on the moon. Thus, they ventured to space to prevent Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher) from obtaining the weapon that could actually rewrite reality. After they were ultimately successful, and now that all the pieces are accounted for, the question becomes whether the Legends will be able to destroy the Spear before it falls back into the hands of the Legion of Doom — and whether they can even be trusted with something that’s so powerful.
“That’s the big question,” Maisie Richardson-Sellers tells EW. “There’s a reason why Rip (Arthur Darvill) tried to destroy it in the first place — he doesn’t think anyone can handle the power of the Spear. Whoever gets it now has the question of, are we going to use it to change reality even if it’s the one thing we shouldn’t do?”
That’s why the Legends will set out to destroy the Spear in a Lord of the Rings-esque hour that features J.R.R. Tolkien (Jack Turner). Finding themselves in the trenches of World War I, the team enlists the help of Tolkien as they try to resist the temptation of the precious Spear. “When we were talking about doing an episode about destroying the Spear of Destiny, destroying this magical MacGuffin of unlimited power, it seemed to be a perfect parallel with Tolkien and our World War I Middle Earth send up,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim says. “It was just one of those circumstances where this idea that we had six months earlier just aligned perfectly with the story we were breaking.” More details here.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
