In perhaps the most aggressive effort in time-saving to date, two obsessive Breaking Bad fans have achieved the unthinkable, synthesizing what they feel to be the crux and scope of AMC’s groundbreaking five-season opus into a two-hour film online.
Taking great pains not to appear as a run-of-the-mill fan-made YouTube contrivance, French filmmakers Lucas Stoll and Gaylor Morestin posted their “study project” on Vimeo last week, and even said as much in the summary below the piece: “It’s not a fan-film, hitting the highlights of show in a home-made homage, but rather a re-imagining of the underlying concept itself, lending itself to full feature-length treatment. An alternative Breaking Bad, to be viewed with fresh eyes.”
Indeed, the auteurs deftly incorporate their own names into a reworked version of the opening credits, and the piece itself definitely shies away from the expected momentum-building jump cuts of a typical fan-made homage. But to be sure, watching this film (which touts the warning “SPOILERS, INDEED”) will not sufficiently capture what it’s like to accompany Walter White on his long, dark journey to becoming Heisenberg.
