Every week, the cast and crew of Hulu’s beloved rom-com The Mindy Project are taking EW readers behind the scenes of the latest episode. This week, Rebecca Rittenhouse, who plays Anna, brings us into the 11th episode of season 5, “Dibs.”
We kick this episode of The Mindy Project off in high gear with Mindy and Anna taking a sick day to recover emotionally from Anna’s husband’s infidelity by eating gelato out of the carton in matching pj’s at 8 a.m. All of this was obviously Mindy’s idea; Anna has never eaten frozen cream in her life.
Morgan then finds Karen in his closet, which she has turned into her recording studio because she is a ukulele genius. He’s annoyed. Though the performances are absolutely brilliant, the real star of this scene is Morgan’s excellent stomach tat, making a rare, coveted guest appearance. They actually tried to make Morgan a shirtless nurse to showcase aforementioned tat, but Ike Barinholtz told producers he was “tired of being objectified in Hollywood.”
Later at the office, we run into some OB/GYNs “at work” (Mindy and Jeremy doing absolutely nothing in his office) when Anna brings Jeremy a scone out of the kindness of her heart. Yeah, exactly. What heart? Mindy points out to Jeremy that Anna is probably into him and he has to ask her out ASAP because his lacework is not a priority.
However, once Jody finds out Jeremy wants to ask out Anna, he calls dibs since he is the alpha. This sends Jeremy on a personal journey of growth and development from beta to alpha. He decides to show up at Mindy’s place unannounced to woo Anna with champagne and strawberries. While trying to impress her, he spills champagne all over her divorce papers and they actually end up making a human connection, which is an absolute first for the ice queen.
The moment is ruined by Jody, who designs a ruse to get Anna to the hospital where he surprises her with a picnic, which is spread all over the floor of the placenta-coated scrub-in room. He’s using a bedpan as an ice bucket. It’s very romantic. Anna doesn’t respond positively to these ill-conceived shenanigans and storms out.
Morgan is also at his wit’s end. He finds Karen so annoying that he is resolved to get her out of the apartment after she ruins his top-bunk steamy hook up with the hot Eastern European lunch lady. He and Colette get physical as she tries to defend her woman. Morgan’s 12 dogs watch as Colette beats him down. Eventually, Morgan, Colette, and Karen all make up and find a way to keep living together peacefully. Sans ukulele.
The episode ends with Anna thanking Jeremy for helping her with her divorce papers and him thinking he should smooch her aggressively because he believes himself to be an alpha now. Anna then makes an announcement to the office that she isn’t interested in dating anyone or kissing anyone and that this office behavior is abnormal, much to the chagrin and humiliation of both Jody and Jeremy, who retreat into Jody’s office to drink away their sorrows. So for Jody, it’s just a normal Tuesday.
