Heading into the season 2 winter finale of Shadowhunters, Clary has a big decision to make: Now that Valentine has both Simon and the Soul Sword, is she willing to risk the life of every Downworlder in order to save Simon?
“There’s no right choice that she has in terms of moving forward because the people that she loves, so many of them are Downworlders,” showrunner Todd Slavkin tells EW. “There’s Luke and there’s Simon and Magnus and all these people and yet, when she finds that Simon’s in danger, she’s beckoned there. It’s a dilemma that for someone like Clary — emotions drive her and it’s her love for humanity that drives her — there is only one choice in her mind and you’ll have to watch to find out.”
But ultimately, it’s a situation that is much bigger than Clary. The threat of the Soul Sword is so great that fans can expect a lot of outside involvement in the finale. According to Slavkin, “What we were looking to do is to create stakes that would affect everybody in the show, like a ticking nuclear bomb basically that would upend both the lives of those who would literally be dead and those that would be affected by that death, and follow the choices that are made in order to extinguish the bomb.”
Slavkin’s fellow showrunner Darren Swimmer adds: “We were really trying to have stakes that were global, that affected the entire world, especially the Downworld. But we also really get into the nitty gritty interpersonal issues between all of our characters.”
Shadowhunters airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
