When Peter Capaldi was shooting his first season as the star of Doctor Who back in 2014, your writer asked the diehard Whovian which classic monsters he would like to see come back during his tenure in the TARDIS.
“I’d like to see a return for the Axons,” he replied. “They appeared as these humanoid creatures, very good-looking, but really they were these kind of festering orcs. I’d also like to see — this is really one for geeks — the return of the Mondasian Cybermen. They came from the planet Mondas and first appeared in (1966’s) ‘The Tenth Planet.’ They were absolutely terrifying, with cloth faces. That was really creepy.”
Two years on, Capaldi has gotten his wish, at least with regard to Mondasian Cybermen. Earlier today, an image was posted on the official Doctor Who Instagram account of the actor with just those creatures from this year’s two-part season finale.
“Guess who’s back!” declared the accompanying message. “It’s the original Mondasian Cybermen, returning for episodes 11 and 12 of the new series.”
The two-part adventure is written by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Rachel Talalay, whose credits include Tank Girl, Sherlock, and several previous episodes of the long-running time travel show. The new season of Doctor Who — the last to star Capaldi — will premiere on BBC America on April 15.
