NBC's Bye Bye Birdie finds its directors
NBC has tapped two live musical veterans for, appropriately, the network’s next live musical.
Jerry Mitchell and Alex Rudzinski will helm the network’s forthcoming Bye Bye Birdie Live this December, after having both worked on Hairspray Live last year.
Mitchell is a two-time Tony winner best known for his resume on Broadway, which includes dual Tony victories for choreography in 2013’s Kinky Boots and 2005’s La Cage aux Folles revival, as well as directing credits of On Your Feet! and Legally Blonde.
Two-time Emmy winner Rudzinski is arguably the man who unlocked the camera formula for taking the live musical beyond the proscenium, having broken the mold of NBC’s first three musicals with Fox’s Grease production in 2016. Now, after his work on Hairspray, the Dancing With the Stars veteran (22 seasons!) is also set to direct and co-executive produce NBC’s upcoming reality series World of Dance opposite Jennifer Lopez.
Jennifer Lopez will headline Bye Bye Birdie Live as Rosie, a put-upon secretary to a music agent who helps spread a national fever when she hatches an idea to bring a bad-boy rock & roll heartthrob to the American heartland. Additional casting has not yet been announced.
