Friday Night Lights alum lands lead in Black Lightning pilot for CW
Black Lightning, the CW’s new DC superhero pilot, has found its leading man in Friday Night Lights and Hart of Dixie veteran Cress Williams, EW has confirmed.
Williams will play Jefferson Pierce, a teacher “with a daughter hell-bent on justice” that pulls him “back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning,” according to the show’s logline.
The CW announced it had acquired the Greg Berlanti-produced pilot earlier this month, making it the fifth superhero project the uber-producer has on the network, with Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. Berlanti also produces the non-superhero (but still comic-inspired) Riverdale on the network.
Black Lightning, one of DC’s first major African-American superheroes, is based on the comic series created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden in 1977.
