Bingeworthy: The Detour seems to have lost its way in season 2
Don’t call it a sophomore slump, but also maybe don’t take any detours to catch TBS’s family sitcom The Detour, say Bingeworthy hosts Touré and Jessica Shaw.
The comedy, which kicked off its second season earlier this week, finds Robin (Natalie Zea), Nate (Jason Jones), and their children settling down in New York City after season 1’s epic, snag-filled family road trip from New York to Florida.
“I like Jason Jones a lot, I think he’s funny,” Touré says of the actor who created the show with wife Samantha Bee. “I think he’s a good actor. I think that he does well in this. I like his wife, but in the one plus one equals three sort of thing, like, the sum is less than the total of the parts.”
Shaw agrees, saying that Jones is a bit more qualified than the material he’s working with. “I feel like he’s smarter and needs funnier than this show ends up being on screen,” she says. “But I’m not angry about it. I’m not like, ‘Oh my god, you have to delete this show.'”
To sum it all up, Shaw nails the perfect pun: “Take a detour to watch something else.”
