Pete Holmes is the latest comedian to create and star in a series based on his own life and career with HBO’s Crashing.

However, Holmes found a way to keep the concept fresh and garnered rave reviews from the hosts of PEN’s Bingeworthy. In this clip, Jessica Shaw calls the series a “comedian’s show,” the same way one would call a comedian a comic’s comic. She notes angst found in a show like Louie, in which Louis C.K.’s fictionalized version of himself struggles against the world, noting that Holmes has a more positive outlook. “We don’t see comics like that who are just kind of like, ‘Aw shucks, I really wanna do this,'” she says.
