It’s not every day you see a 139-year-old institution going through an angsty period, and Stephen Colbert is calling one out.

On Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show, Colbert poked fun at the venerable Washington Post over its recent decision to roll out a new motto, “Democracy dies in darkness,” which has long been used internally.

“The Washington Post has officially entered its goth phase,” Colbert quipped. He went on to list some other top choices that didn’t make the cut, including “No, you shut up!”; “Come at me, bro!”; and “We took down Nixon — who wants next?”

The Late Show airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS. Watch a clip above.
