The show debuts on Feb. 20.
Originally a TV movie for VH1 in 2016, The Breaks is now a full-fledged series set to premiere on Feb. 20. A week ahead of the show’s debut, EW has your exclusive look at the first five minutes.
Inspired by Dan Charnas’ book The Big Payback, The Breaks follows three close friends living in New York City in 1990 at the beginning of the hip-hop revolution. All of them aspire to break into the business.
The exclusive clip from the series introduces (or, for fans of last year’s film, reintroduces) DeeVee (Tristan “Mack” Wilds), Nikki (Afton Williamson), and David (David Call), as well as Wilds’ fellow The Wire alum Wood Harris as mogul Barry Fouray.
The series is full of recognizable faces from television, movies, and hip-hop, including Evan Handler (Sex and the City), Sinqua Walls (Power), William Jackson Harper (The Good Place), Melonie Diaz (Fruitvale Station), Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot), T.I., and Method Man (another The Wire alum).
The Breaks, which hails from Seith Mann (The Wire) and John J. Strauss (Mozart in the Jungle), returns to VH1 on Feb. 20 at 9 p.m. ET.
