Jane the Virgin: Andrea Navedo says Xo’s rekindled romance isn't 'flighty'
When we last saw Xo (Andrea Navedo) on Jane the Virgin, she came clean to Jane about seeing former flame Bruce again — that is, after Rogelio spilled the beans — and admitted she knew he was married when they were previously together. Bruce is now a single man, but Jane didn't take the reunion news well even though they're just testing the waters, and it appears that tension will continue on when the show returns with its midseason premiere on Monday (9 p.m. ET on The CW).
"It's pretty bad, but it gets to the point where, through Mateo, [Jane] has to learn how to control her anger," Navedo tells EW, adding that she and her husband similarly adjusted their behavior when they had their first child. "Jane has to learn how to be more accepting for the sake of the family and now she has a son who's watching…so Mateo is the catalyst." <strong>RELATED: Hear more of the latest TV news from this week</strong><iframe src="https://art19.com/shows/ews-what-to-watch/episodes/e08e9cb3-39e3-4126-85e9-7413e09dded4/embed?theme=light-gray-blue" scrolling="no" width="100%" height="460" frameborder="0" class="" allowfullscreen="" resize="0" replace_attributes="1" name=""></iframe>
Xo's mother, Alba, is even more accepting of the situation and is even kind of on her daughter's side. "I guess she's being the bigger, more mature person saying, you know what, he's apologized, he made a mistake, let's give him a chance," Navedo details. That perspective might come as surprising to some considering how Alba's traditional values have often been at odds with Xo's more modern approach to the world — like when they disagreed about Xo having an abortion earlier in the season. "Everyone grows in different ways, so this is an opportunity for Alba to grow."
With Jane being more in charge of her feelings, and Alba being accepting of the return of the ex, it appears there's a chance at a real future for Xo and Bruce. "I think there's a big possibility and we'll have to see what happens," Navedo says of the relationship, one that she describes as being loving, affectionate, supportive, and positive. "It's not going to be a flighty one." Going forward, that relationship will take center stage where Xo's narrative is concerned; the dance school, Navedo imagines, will come back again in the future.
But, what about Xo's other romantic interest? #XoRo fans shouldn't hold their breath, at least not right now. "It's on the back burner from what I can tell," Navedo says, but she's pulling for a reunion with Rogelio. In terms of why she likes them together, "They're kind of like opposites of the same coin, so to speak. I think she admires Rogelio because he's so confident and charismatic and funny and kind of sweet all at the same time, and she admires him as a performer. She'd like to be more like that…Then he's the father of her baby. I think she'll always have a tender spot for him."
Overall, Navedo thinks Xo is progressing. "She's definitely maturing. You're going to see the change in her clothing and hair and attitude. You'll see her making more informed and intelligent decisions, which I'm glad about because you get to see someone who has some flaws, but is working on themselves, trying to evolve like any other human being, so I like that they're showing that in her." The feeling is mutual.
