This Is Us creator: 'We're not going to drag out Toby's fate'
After a lengthy, five-week hiatus, NBC family dramedy This Is Us returns to the air on Jan. 10 with some unfinished and potentially tragic business to handle. When we last saw Toby (Chris Sullivan), he was fighting for his life after a Christmas Eve collapse in the house of Randall (Sterling K. Brown). Is Toby alive? Is Toby dead? Is Toby somewhere in between? Looks like the answer will be revealed before the first commercial break next week.
“We’re not going to drag out Toby’s fate,” creator Dan Fogelman tells EW. “You find out if he made it in the first five minutes of the episode.”
And while you will find the present-day Pearsons mourning, sighing in relief, or doing something in between, you also will be teleported into the past to see Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) — as well as a very familiar face — before the chaos of parenthood commenced.
“We go back to their pre-Big Three period — actually, we start early in the pregnancy,” hints Fogelman, “before they even knew they were having triplets.” In sum: More medical surprises await.
The return episode of This Is Us, which is titled “The Right Thing to Do,” airs Tuesday at 9 p.m.
NBC’s beloved era-hopping drama tells the story of the Pearson family through the years.
