Denzel Washington’s acting chops are on full display in his latest film, Fences. The adaptation of the award-winning August Wilson play (which Washington also directed) features him reprising his starring role from the recent Broadway revival and delivering dramatic monologues with the fiery power he’s demonstrated in role after role over the past few decades. On Monday night, Washington put those same talents to comedic use when he stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and read greeting cards in a dramatic voice.

“You make me so very happy,” Washington read one of them, before quickly going deadpan for the punchline: “I’ll be honest, though. Cheese makes me pretty happy too.”

“Your attention please: Christmas has been canceled,” Fallon read in a loud announcer’s voice. “I told Santa you’d been good all year and he died laughing.”
