Watch the exclusive trailer for the glittering, glamorous Halston documentary

Posted on

Following last year’s heartbreaking McQueen, another legendary fashion designer is getting the documentary treatment this summer.

“His clothes danced with you,” Liza Minnelli says in the trailer for Halston, a stylish new doc about her old friend and his glamorous, disco-ready creations. The latest from filmmaker Frédéric Tcheng, who also directed 2014’s dreamy fashion chronicle Dior & I, the Sundance-premiered doc traces the history and legacy of Halston, whose creative vision helped establish the U.S. as a fashion superpower and whose company was subsequently consumed by the commercial demands of a rapidly evolving industry.

Roy Halston Frowick rose to prominence over the course of the glitzy ‘70s (at the end of which he was a regular at Studio 54). Many of his family members, collaborators, and famous pals — Minnelli, Iman, and Andy Warhol included — appear in the doc in interviews or archival footage, and fashion journalist Tavi Gevinson stars in the film’s fictional framing device as a researcher investigating the designer’s history by going through the Halston archives.

As the man who first put a pillbox hat on Jacqueline Kennedy, one of the five designers who put American style on the map at the 1973 “battle of Versailles” show, and a pioneer on the business side of the industry, Halston was a singular, immensely influential figure in the history of American fashion. Who better to glam up the summer box office?

Halston hits theaters May 24. Check out the trailer for the documentary, exclusive to EW and PEOPLE, above.
