Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, and several fabulous wigs bring to life the real-life story of an infamous literary farce in the new J.T. LeRoy trailer.

The Justin Kelly-directed film follows a young woman named Savannah Knoop (Stewart) as she bonds with her sister-in-law, Laura Albert (Dern), though their relationship takes a mischievous turn as Laura hatches a plan to masquerade Savannah as the titular male writer.

Together, through the use of hairpieces and other various disguises, the pair fooled countless readers and high-ranking members of the literary world into believing J.T. was a real person who wrote about a series of novels reportedly inspired by his experiences with poverty, drugs, and sexual abuse as a teenager.

Their scheme even takes them to the Hollywood home of Courtney Love, who appears in the clip to express interest in adapting one of J.T.’s stories into a film.

J.T. LeRoy — which premiered to positive reception at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival — is in theaters and available On Demand beginning April 26. Watch the film’s new trailer above.
