J.R.R. Tolkien is the most influential fantasy author of the 20th century, but he didn’t write Lord of the Rings because he loved swords and orcs. His first love, as seen in the new trailer for the Nicholas Hoult-starring biopic Tolkien, was language.
“Since childhood, I have been fascinated with language,” Hoult’s Tolkien explains on a date with Edith (Lily Collins). “I’ve invented my own. I made stories, legends,”
Aside from his love of language, the movie obviously concerns itself with Tolkien’s love for Edith, his eventual wife. But the fraternal love that fuels LOTR‘s Fellowship of the Ring didn’t come from nowhere, either. There are several shots of Tolkien palling around with male friends, from childhood games to college fraternizing to trench-fighting in World War I.
“This is more than just a friendship,” one of his buddies says at one point. “It’s an alliance. An invincible alliance.”
“A fellowship,” Tolkien summarizes.
