Carey Mulligan is bringing her acclaimed Girls & Boys performance stateside.
The Oscar-nominated actress, who earlier this year drew raves for her turn in Dennis Kelly’s one-woman play on the main stage of London’s Royal Court, will reprise her role this summer for a limited New York run at the Minetta Lane Theatre. Performances will begin June 12 before an official June 20 opening, and the show, produced by Audible, is set to run for five weeks.
In addition to the New York premiere, Audible will record and release Carey Mulligan’s performance as an audio play. “Audible is seeking to transform the theater experience and usher in a new era for audio drama,” Audible Theater Artistic Producer Kate Navin said in a statement. “By providing performers and creators support and resources necessary to thrive in their craft, Audible is extending compelling performances and building a home for artists and creatives.”
Girls & Boys is a 90-minute one-woman show, centering on an unnamed character. The play recounts an unexpected meeting at an airport which leads to an intense, passionate, head-over-heels relationship. Before long, the couple begins to settle down, buy a house, juggle careers, have kids — just like an ordinary family. But then their world starts to unravel, and things take a disturbing turn, creating a tragic, violent look at parenthood and trauma.
Lyndsey Turner, who directed the Royal Court world premiere, will return to helm this New York staging. Tickets are available here.
