If you still haven’t been able to let Frozen go, you’re in luck.
Disney Theatrical Productions has released the first official trailer for its Frozen musical, coming to Broadway in 2018. The trailer features behind-the-scenes footage of rehearsal for the new musical, including shots of dancers executing choreography and several glimpses of Elsa (Caissie Levy) and Anna (Patti Murin) in action.
The trailer also features interviews with much of the production team, including director Michael Grandage, book writer Jennifer Lee, composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, co-producer Anne Quart, choreographer Rob Ashford, and President and Producer of Disney Theatrical Productions Thomas Schumacher.
The turnaround from screen to stage has been remarkably quick, but all parties involved say they just knew Frozen was destined for Broadway. Schumacher knew it was a prime property for Disney Theatrical Productions in very early days. “I screened a rough cut of Frozen. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at on the screen was a perfect Broadway musical,” he said.
Book and original screenwriter Jennifer Lee echoes this thought saying that watching rehearsals has made her realize “this is exactly what Frozen was made for.”
The stage production promises to remain true to its source material while digging deeper into the emotional lives of its characters, particularly Anna and Elsa. Composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson Lopez note the film’s original seven songs have expanded into a score that includes nearly 21 tunes.
The production will play its out-of-town tryout at the Buell Theatre in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts from Aug. 17-Oct. 1, 2017. It will then make its Broadway debut in spring 2018.
