It’s the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World reunion we’ve been waiting for: Chris Evans and Michael Cera will team up to star in Lobby Hero, a play by Academy Award-winner Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester By the Sea). The show will open March 2018, kicking off Second Stage Theater’s inaugural season of Broadway programming.
Set in the lobby of a Manhattan apartment building, the play follows the simmering tensions between four New Yorkers involved in a murder investigation and “what happens when personal and professional personas find themselves at odds.” The cast includes “a young security guard with big ambitions [who] clashes with his stern boss, [and] an intense rookie cop and her unpredictable partner.” Which roles Evans and Cera will play, and who will fill the remaining roles, was not immediately announced.
The play, which sees Trip Cullman direct, will mark Evans’ stage debut; Cera has appeared on Broadway before and spoken dialogue written by Lonergan in This Is Our Youth. The duo costarred in Edgar Wright’s 2010 graphic novel adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World as rival romantic interests.
Lobby Hero also marks Second Stage’s growing profile, with the non-profit having current Broadway hit Dear Evan Hansen and Pulitzer Prize winners Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Between Riverside and Crazy and Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt’s Next to Normal.
Lobby Hero will open at the Hayes Theater in March 2018.
