Rami Malek was asked on the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet about what surprised him most about Freddie Mercury, who he portrayed to much acclaim in Bohemian Rhapsody.
His answer was a good one: “There was one moment that I hear [Mercury] took Princess Diana and disguised her as a man and took her into a bar, just so they could have their own fun moment without anybody else being aware,” he said during an interview for the PEOPLE, Entertainment Weekly & TNT Red Carpet Live show on Sunday night (see the interview above). “Now, I don’t know if that’s true, this might be an urban legend.”
Now the full alleged story is even better. According to actress Cleo Rocos and reported by PopSugar, Mercury and the People’s Princess “were sipping Champagne and watching reruns of Golden Girls” one evening while “creating their own subplots for the sitcom, albeit with a ‘much a naughtier storyline'” when Diana learned Mercury and his friends were going out to a gay bar “known for its rough crowd and bar fights.” They devised a plan to dress the British royal in an “army jacket, aviator sunglasses, and a leather cap.” The strategy worked and Diana was able to (at least briefly) party undercover with Mercury at the bar while avoiding unwanted attention.
Malek is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the SAG Awards and recently won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture.
